YEP Mentorship

Being told how someone else did it is worth more than any amount of general advice. YEP pairs members with mentors a few steps ahead of them — matched by hand by the YEP career team, not by an algorithm.

Mentorship runs inside the YEP member community. Membership is free.

Two ways in

Ask for a mentor, or become one.

Both are short applications inside the member community. You can do either, or both — plenty of people are further along in one field than another.

Mentee application

Looking for a mentor

Someone a few steps ahead who can help you think through where you are going — a field you are trying to move into, a decision you keep circling, a career restarted in a new country.

What you will be asked
  • Your industry or field
  • Where you are in your career
  • What you are hoping to get out of it, in a sentence or two
  • How much time you realistically have, and whether you prefer to meet virtually or in person
Mentor application

Willing to mentor

You do not need to be senior. You need to be further along than the person asking, and willing to be honest about how you got there.

What you will be asked
  • Your industry or field
  • Your experience — your role, and roughly how long
  • What you can help with, as specifically as you can put it
  • How much time you realistically have, and whether you prefer to meet virtually or in person
How it works

Four steps, and a person at the end of them.

There is no matching engine. A member of the YEP career team reads both applications and decides.

1

Join YEP

Free, and takes a minute — continue with Google or LinkedIn, or use an email address. New members are reviewed before the community opens up, mentorship included.

2

Say you are open to it

Tick Mentoring others or Seeking mentorship on your profile. That makes you findable in the member directory. On its own it does not enrol you.

3

Send the short application

It appears the moment you tick the box. You can update it later, or withdraw it, without asking anyone.

4

The career team matches

By hand, from what both of you wrote. They introduce you by email and check in as the match runs.

Straight answers

What this is, and what it is not.

Worth reading before you apply, so nothing here is a surprise later.

It is free.

There is no charge to be mentored or to mentor, and no paid tier that gets you a better match. YEP membership is free.

It is not instant, and not guaranteed.

Every match is made by a person, and it depends on a mentor being available in roughly the right field. Applying does not guarantee you will be matched.

It has a beginning and an end.

Matches run for an agreed number of sessions over an agreed period rather than being open-ended, so neither side is signing up to something without a shape. The career team sets the length and can change it.

It is not a job placement service.

A mentor is not a referral. If what you want is openings, the member job board and the career team’s Elevate newsletter are the better door.

You stay in control of it.

You can update what you wrote or withdraw your application at any time, from your profile. Nothing is deleted when you withdraw — you can put it back.

What you write stays private.

Your application is visible to you and to the YEP career team. It is not published, and it does not appear on your profile or in the member directory.

The community is the point.

Mentorship is one of several things that come with a free YEP membership — alongside the member directory, the job board, events and the career team.
